E-book Library:"Travel"

It is the driest, flattest, hottest, most desiccated, infertile and climatically aggressive of all the inhabited continents and still Australia teems with life – a large portion of it quite deadly. In fact, Australia has more things that can kill you in a very nasty way than anywhere else. Ignoring such dangers – and yet curiously obsessed by them – Bill Bryson journeyed to Australia and promptly fell in love with the country. And who can blame him? The people are cheerful, extrovert, quick-witted and unfailingly obliging: their cities are safe and clean and nearly always built on water; the food is excellent; the beer is cold and the sun nearly always shines. Life doesn’t get much better than this...

The 1930s were one of the most important decades in defining the history of the twentieth century. It saw the rise of right-wing nationalism, the challenge to established democracies and the full force of imperialist aggression. Cultural Encounters makes an important contribution to our understanding of the ideological and cultural forces which were active in defining notions of national identity in the 1930s. By examining the work of writers and journalists from a range of European countries who used the medium of travel writing to articulate perceptions of their own and other cultures, the book gives a comprehensive account of the complex intellectual climate of the 1930s. By:"Lonely Planet,"
Published on 2010 by Lonely Planet

E-book Library:"Travel"

And here's the list. Everywhere. In one comprehensive volume. Defining everywhere was no easy task. Jotting down the 192 member states of the United Nations was the easy part; deciding which other destinations to include provoked much spirited debate and food for thought. We're very proud of this book, an all-consuming project that has involved huge input from authors, staff, photographers and experts from around the globe. Like any serious addiction, the travel bug requires constant attention. If, like me, you consider travel to be an important part of your life, then this book will be bad news - it shows us that no matter how far we travel, there's always further to go. At Lonely Planet we believe passionately in the power of independent travel to transform travellers and the communities to which they travel. Bringing respect, sensitivity, curiosity and a generous dose of humour to the travel experience is enormously important, and we hope this book acts not just as a reference tool, but also as a valuable introduction to a better travel experience. Travel is the world's most important business, but it means far more than just money and employment. It is through travel that we go out and meet the world and the world cornes to meet us. So open The Travel Book and dive inside - my bet is that soon you'll want to turn the printed experience into a real one.

Climate Change and Tourism

Climate Change and Tourism
By:"World Tourism Organization","United Nations Environment Programme"
Published on 2008-01-01 by UNEP/Earthprint

E-book Library:"Business & Economics"

This publication contains the key proceedings and technical report of the Second International Conference on Climate Change and Tourism, held in Davos, Switzerland, 1-3 October 2007. The Davos Declaration and the summary of the conference debates demonstrate a clear commitment of the tourism sector to address climate change issues, and provide concrete recommendations for actions. The extensive technical report included in this publication was commissioned to an international team of experts by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). It provides a synthesis of the state of knowledge about current and future likely impacts of climate change on tourism destinations around the world, possible implications for tourist demand, current levels and trends in GHG emissions from the tourism sector, and an overview of policy and management responses adopted by the key stakeholder groups (international organizations, public administrations, the tourism industry) with respect to adaptation to and mitigation of climate change. This publication is principally aimed at the tourism industry and government organizations at the different levels, who will have the primary responsibility of developing mitigation and adaptation strategies to respond to the challenges that global climate change will bring to the tourism sector. It also constitutes an important tool for international agencies, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and financial institutions.

Contemporary Challenges of Transport Systems and Traffic Engineering

Contemporary Challenges of Transport Systems and Traffic Engineering
By:"Elżbieta Macioszek","Grzegorz Sierpiński"
Published on 2016-09-01 by Springer

E-book Library:"Computers"

The publication contains numerous valuable guidelines one will find particularly useful while making decisions concerning development and improvement of transport systems. It provides a multitude of case studies connected with diverse problems of both technical and organisational nature. The knowledge displayed while discussing practical examples as well as the decision making support systems described in the publication will certainly attract interest of those who face the challenge of seeking solutions to problems of contemporary transport systems on a daily basis. Consequently, this publication is dedicated to local authorities involved in planning and preparation of development strategies for specific transport related areas (in both urban and regional dimension) as well as to representatives of business and industry, being those who participate directly in the implementation of traffic engineering solutions. The guidelines provided in individual chapters of the publication will make it possible to address the given problem in a technologically advanced manner and simplify the choice of appropriate strategies (including those related to increasing competitiveness of public transport, integration of supply chains or route planning support by means of technologically advanced systems and applications). On the other hand, since the publication also concerns the new approach to theoretical models (including travel models, capacity models, road condition modelling and speed-volume relationship), it will raise interest among researches and scientists studying this body of problems. The publication entitled Contemporary Challenges of Transport Systems and Traffic Engineering contains selected papers submitted to and presented at the 13th ”Transport Systems. Theory and Practice” Scientific and Technical Conference organised by the Department of Transport Systems and Traffic Engineering at the Faculty of Transport of the Silesian University of Technology. The conference was held on 19-21 September 2016 in Katowice (Poland). More details at www.TSTP.polsl.pl

Miami

Miami
By:"Joan Didion"
Published on 2013-11-19 by Zola Books

E-book Library:"Political Science"

“Havana vanities come to dust in Miami,” writes Joan Didion at the start of Miami, a book that looks beyond the city’s bright pastel facades and sunlit beaches to shadowed scenes, dark history. Didion trains her penetrating vision on Miami’s Cuban exile community during the 1980s, dissecting their hopes and fierce politics, their undying commitment to Castro’s overthrow, and their tangled dynamic with successive American administrations since the failed Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961. Miami uncovers a world of “violence, intrigue, vengeance, political manipulation, and broken dreams,” wrote The Boston Globe upon its 1987 release. In framing her story, Didion offers a hauntingly detailed portrait of the city at a time of booming cocaine-trafficking, racial strife, and skyrocketing murder rates. She also reaches back to the botched 1961 invasion, the Kennedy assassination, and the Watergate break-in, setting forth a disturbing history of America’s foreign policy, especially its Latin America policy, during the Cold War. Download this first-ever e-book edition of Miami and let Joan Didion, working in prose the Los Angeles Times called “masterful,” take you back to this south Florida city in an era of power plays, assassinations, and explosive political passions.

China and Africa

China and Africa
By:"Ian Taylor"
Published on 2007-01-24 by Routledge

E-book Library:"Political Science"

With China’s rise to the status of world power, trade and political links between Africa and China have been escalating at an astonishing rate. Sino-African relations are set to become an increasingly significant feature of world politics as China’s hunger for energy resources grows and many African countries seek a partner that, unlike the West, does not worry about democracy and transparency, or impose political conditions on economic relations. Ian Taylor, one of the foremost authorities on the international relations and political economy of Africa, provides a comprehensive assessment of relations between China and Africa. He discusses the historical evolution of Sino-African relations in the period since the 1949 revolution, with particular emphasis on the period since the end of the Cultural Revolution. Considering in detail China’s relations with Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia, South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Malawi, Taylor demonstrates how China has used the rhetoric of anti-hegemonies to secure and promote its position in the Third World. Taylor gives an engaging account of the hitherto under-researched topic of relations between China and Africa, a phenomenon of growing importance in contemporary international politics.

Visual Culture and Public Policy

Visual Culture and Public Policy
By:"Victor Bekkers","Rebecca Moody"
Published on 2014-08-21 by Routledge

E-book Library:"Business & Economics"

Traditionally, images have played an important role in politics and policy making, mostly in relation to propaganda and public communication. However, contemporary society is inundated with visual material due to the increasing ubiquity of media and visual technologies that facilitate the production, distribution and consumption of images in new and innovative ways. As such, a visual culture has emerged, and a number of authors have written on visual culture and the technologies which underlie it. However, a clear link to policy making is still lacking. This books links the emergence of this visual culture to policy making and explores how visual culture (and the growing number of technologies used to create and distribute images) influence the course, content and outcome of public policy making. It examines how visual culture and policy making in contemporary society are intertwined, elaborating concepts such as power, framing and storytelling. It then links this to technology, and the way this can enhance power, transparency, registration, surveillance and communication. Dealing with the entire cycle of public policy making, from agenda-setting, to policy design, decision making to evaluation, the book contains diverse international case studies including water management, risk management, live-stock diseases, minority integration, racism, freedom of speech, healthcare, disaster evaluation and terrorism.
